Closing speech!

At the start of the CDS, we were asked to come out with a metaphor about ourselves. There were lots of funny metaphors around the class, but I have chosen mine as dolphin. Why dolphins? It was because dolphins are playful animal yet they are very smart. They are even capable of communicating with humans. When times when humans are in danger in the sea, there are even cases whereby dolphins forming a barrier against sharks in the ocean. Therefore, I would picture myself like that. Even though I’m naughty and playful in nature, however at times, I’m able to react to situations and conquer it with what I’m capable of.

Also, I remember my teacher saying about how we should ignite ourselves like fireworks and show cases our talents and knowledge in daily application in our life. One part was to score well for our test! After attending this cds, I’ve learn lots of useful information about this cds. Although I’m tasked to come out with a metaphor for the most important in this cds, I think that every single lesson is equally important to me. Therefore I would like to dedicate this metaphor to these entire lessons, which is the knowledge I have learn was as resourceful and useful as Google. Why Google? Google is one place whereby almost everything in the world can be explained in Google. Therefore it’s a very knowledgeable place. I would like to picture what I’ve learnt like as if it was from Google, very vast, very informative.

2nd LIFE!

Second Life! This time, I'm tasked to go to a oversea destination!

And I pick London City!

CHECK LONDON CITY OUT! Such a new place!

I did a little research on the bridge and found out that London City got a new attraction added to its skyline in the form of Tower Bridge.

Often confused by people that it's London Bridge, Tower Bridge gets its name from being the closest bridge to the Tower Of London and not from its turrets.

Despite what many tourists think, Tower Bridge is not many hundreds of years old, it was actually completed in 1894.

See the similarity? It seems that Second Life has done a lot to mimic the virtual world with the real world! It really lets the user experience a whole experience that we might be able to experience and see in our real life!

That is me checking out the community around, there's lots of British Flag around London City.

It has always been a place that I would like to visit since very young as it seems pretty cool to me, and Second Life gave me a chance to have sneak peek at it on a virtual basis.

How about this, the Royal Exchange and Cannon Street Station are just two of the historic buildings of Mainland London. Feeling damn awesome right now as I'm checking out a few of London real buildings that I will experience next time when I visit London!

I’ve always wanted to travel to London ever since I was young. Therefore, I had chosen http://www.visitlondon.com as the website to begin my internet touring on London City. This website has a attention seeking layout and it is properly organized. There are lots of photo and images of London City which is very attractive. The tabs on the top is neatly classified to the needs of visitors, like accommodation, places to go, what’s on, and most importantly there are maps of London.

Guess I will check the top ten attractions in London. There are also lots of food attractions in the web pages with all sorts of offer. It is also rated as a shopping paradise. Overall, it’s a beautiful place to visit and this website showcases the fabulous points of it.

Invisible webs

Hi everyone!

Today, I learned to use two different types of invisible webs during this practical. One of them is called EbscoHost and the other is called Factiva. Both the invisible webs are found in the TP’s Digital Library Portal Research Gateway via http://spark.tp.edu.sg/. Before attending this lesson, I didn't know that there were such faculties in the TP library website until i was introduced the different search gateway that is found in the website. I didn't even know that such invisible web existed whereby we students are given special privileges to search for information in the website.

I decided to do a search on twitter, a social networking tool for this activity as we had just done the tutorial on it during results.

Firstly, I did my search on EbscoHost. It was really a good search engine. There were Boolean operators in the search page itself and the engine is able to classify keywords in to the type of field which we want, it is very different as compare to normal search engine like Google. There were also similar search properties like advanced search as compare to most search engine that is available to the public. Apart from that, there were functions to allow the user to refine the search according to news, journal, books, etc. When the search results were given, the engine gives full detail of the article itself, classifying it according to the document type, the author of it and even the word count for the entire article. Abstract of the article is also given right at the top of all the information which allow the user to identify the summary from the whole chunk of information.




After trying out invisible web (databases), I would say that it is more effective as compare to search engines, meta-search or subject directories because it helps the user refine the search and place them accordingly to different sections. Also the information found is more relevant as compare to search engines. However search engines which are available to public gives results that most people would want to find at a instant which is good if basic information is needed.

However the good point about invisible web used in tp is that we can find more information directly related to our school projects and course. I would use ProQuest Science & Sociology or EbscoHost because this two invisible web databases are relating to engineering which is useful for my course.
